Salon's Story

​

Salon's father is an abusive alcoholic, the only saving grace is that he is hardly ever at home, only dropping in to see his family once every couple of months. Where he goes, and what he does in-between, his wife Sabita does not know.

​

For the last couple of years we have been sponsoring Salon's older sister Deepsika. During that time we have got to know Salon and his mum well. Mum Sabita's commitment to both her children's educations is remarkable. 

​

Every day Sabita walks Deepsika and Salon 1 and a half hours to drop Deepsika off at school and then walks another hour to drop Salon off at a nursery class at a different school. During the day she works in the area doing other peoples laundry for a few dollars a day. In the afternoons the 3 of them make the long walk home. Sabita works 6 days a week.

They currently live with Sabita's in-laws. It is a toxic environment where she never feels welcome but at least they have a roof over their heads. Sabita often says she would like to leave her husband and live a better life closer to schools and her work. Scared and apprehensive of the repercussions of such a decision, and her inability to properly provide for her children, Sabita stays in the situation she is in now.

Sabita also suffers from epilepsy but manages it well with medication.

We want to find a sponsor for Salon and enroll him into the same school as his sister. This will greatly reduce travel time for Sabita each day, and allow her to have the opportunity to work more and  earn more money. We want to stand beside Sabita as she does the very best she can for her children. We hope with the extra income, our emotional support and the financial backing for her children's educations it will allow her to feel more in control and empowered to make decisions into the future that she feels are best for her and the children.
