Her story
Since her mother married for the second time, the family have been living in an area called "the slums". The rooms are made out of tin, the dwellings are interlinked, the conditions extremely cramped and families are usually without basic services (water and power).
In 2021 she was sexually assaulted by a neighbour. She immediately alerted her mother and step father. They did not inform the police, instead desperately tried to cover it up. If the community found out then the family would be shunned the young lady "tainted" and never able to marry. Instead, her step father threatened to abuse her too if she spoke of the assault.
Her mother has been actively, and anxiously seeking to find a groom for her, but she refuses to be forced into marriage. With tensions growing and the continued risk to her safety, she has been removed from the home and placed into the care of our partner organization where she now has a safe place to live, access to quality councilors, will be surrounded by girls that have survived similar experiences and also have the opportunity to attend a good quality school.
We believe a crucial part of moving forward, to healing, and to succeeding is to have the means and opportunity to access a quality education. We want to stand beside her and help her as she bravely takes steps to build a brighter future for herself.
